The Calhoun Issue

In my end of the year All-Shore picks I included Shilique Calhoun on my second team. That seems to have sparked a bit of discussion out there in forum land. First, let me say that my picks are simply the educated opinion of a guy who’s studied basketball for a long time. Hopefully, over the last two years I’ve been able to inform a little bit and educate a little bit. I certainly don’t expect everyone to agree with everything I write. As I’ve said before, it’s just one guys opinion. I can certainly understand why the Shilique Calhoun issue is a touchy one. The kid did quit on his team in a big game. For that he was permanently dismissed from the team. As he should have been.

I understand why some people think he shouldn’t have been included. I can’t argue with that reasoning. But my feeling was we just can’t pretend the kid wasn’t a major factor most of the season. I felt he was one of the ten best players I saw this year so I included him on my teams.

Bottom line is Shilique was punished for his behavior and that was the right thing to do. I think he was a heck of a basketball player for the time he played and I acknowledged that. I listed him based purely on his performance as a player. Nothing else.

I know there are people who believe I should not have included him. They are not wrong and I respect their opinion. We all can’t agree on everything and that’s what makes for good discussion and differences of opinion. The true All Shore Media team is the one produced by Scott and Matt. Shilique is not included there. And maybe that’s the way it should be.
